Disney's 'Percy Jackson and the Olympians' casts Walker Scobell in title role
We have our Percy Jackson!
"Percy Jackson and the Olympians" author Rick Riordan on Monday announced that Walker Scobell has been cast as the lead in the upcoming Disney+ series adaptation of his work.
"Walker Scobell is an incredibly talented young man who blew us away with his audition tapes for the role of Percy," Riordan wrote in his website. "It was obvious to me and the rest of the team that Walker had the perfect mix of comedic timing, sweetness, rebelliousness, snark and heroism to embody our hero Percy Jackson."
He added that the young actor was also a "super-fan" of the Percy Jackson books, and even wore a "Camp Half-Blood" shirt during the Zoom call in which Riordan delivered to him the news of his casting.
"We look forward to working with the Scobells in Vancouver full-time this summer and building on the dedicated, supportive, enthusiastic community that is rapidly forming around this project. The excitement is so thick you could cut it with a Celestial bronze sword," Riordan said.
Walker has done numerous chemistry reads with candidates of the other two leads, Annabeth and Grover, but he is set to begin working on the series full-time in the summer.
"Walker is an avid skateboarder and skier, and is super excited to get to Vancouver and start working on swordplay, holding his breath underwater, and other stunts of derring-do. I’m excited he’s doing all that and I don’t have to, but I will definitely be there cheering him on every step of the way!" Riordan said.
Scobell recently starred in Netflix's "The Adam Project," where he portrayed the younger version od Ryan Reynolds' character.
Riordan announced that a live-action series of "Percy Jackson and the Olympians" was in the works as early as May 2020.
In January this year, the show was officially green-lit by Disney+.
"Percy Jackson & the Olympians" is a series of books that brings to life Greek mythology as it tells the story of Percy, a once normal boy who discovers he is the son of Poseidon when he comes of age.
Two live action films have adapted the first two novels of the series: "Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief" in 2010 and "Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters" in 2013. —JCB, GMA News
