What are your chances of winning the lotto?

Nobody has won the P122M jackpot prize of the grand lotto 655 just yet and so the Unang Hirit barkada wondered: What nga ba are our chances of winning the jackpot?

On Unang Hirit Friday, statistician and assistant professor at the UP School of Statistics Wendell Campano crunched the numbers and said your chances of winning the jackpot was...one in 29 million.

"Sa 6/55, pipili ka ng anim na numbers from a pool of 55 numbers," he began. "Kung bibilangan mo lahat nang yon, there are more than 28.9 million combinations."

"Or 28, 989, 675 to be exact," he said. "So basically ang chance ay one in 29 million."

Arnold Clavio challenged Campano and said, "Kung P122, eh di puhunan mo P20m mahigit, mananalo ka pa ng P100M kung tatayain mo lahat."

But Campano gamely answered back: "Kung tatayain mo lahat ng combination, P579M ang puhunan mo."

So no, unfortunately, betting on all the possible combinations isn't a winning strategy.

Campano also dismissed the various popular styles of betting such as counting on the numbers that appeared in dreams or taking care of numbers themselves.

"Walang epekto ang paraan ng pagpili sa pagtaya," he broke the unfortunate truth.
