Michael Pacquiao says choosing music helped him create a name for himself

Michael Pacquiao has chosen a totally different path from his dad Manny Pacquiao. Instead of being the next top boxer, he found his passion in hip-hop and rapping.

In an interview on “Share Ko Lang,” Michael shared that although he tried boxing and said it was a good experience, he still decided to focus on music because he loves it so much.

When Michael started music in 2020 at 18 years old, everybody was shocked.

Michael even said that his parents didn’t know that he ventured into music until one of his songs, which he wrote with a friend using very basic music equipment, went viral. Fortunately, they were nothing but proud of him.

“They would see me in my room lang in a computer all day, every day,” he said. “But yeah, but the process was just me learning how to make beats. And that's when that started. And learning how to compose or write lyrics for music and learning basically, music things.”

But then he started getting known for his songs.

“They [were] like 'Pacquiao, Pacquiao pala 'to doing music,'" he said.

Michael added that some people still told him to continue boxing, but now, he is seen as a rapper.

“The feeling is nice. Which is good because at least I don't hear anymore like ‘son of my dad,’” he said. “I hear mostly ‘uy 'yung Michael Pacquiao, 'yung rapper.’ So at least it's out there na. The people know that I'm a rapper.”

Michael said that going into music was a “natural thing for me to just do it on my own because I've always done things on my own.”

“And I believe that I could do it on my own. Yeah, I believe that I was able to do it on my own — that I can just do it now than, like ask for help or whatever.”

For the young rapper, it means a lot to be his own person as well.

“Because people think na boxer si Daddy, boxing din kami, na wala kaming ibang talents or other things na magawa,” Michael said.

“But here's to show na just because my dad is a boxer, doesn't mean that I have to pursue boxing. That doesn't mean na that's the only thing we can do like, talent-wise.” —Nika Roque/JCB, GMA Integrated News
