Year in Review: 5 anime shows that made noise in 2023

2023 brought us a lot of jaw-dropping scenes in anime, and they're worth honoring for the thrill they gave us this year.

From "Jujutsu Kaisen" and its heart-stopping moments in Shibuya, to "One Piece" and the absolute fun that was Gear 5 Luffy, here are anime shows that are making us look forward to the next season.

1. Attack on Titan

"Attack on Titan: The Final Season" aired the last part of the anime that has been running since 2013.

The finale, which was released in November, gave an epic end to Eren Yeager's journey. Although the ending left fans with mixed feelings, there's no doubt that the finale was a wild ride, staying true to the show's nature.

Based on the manga by Hajime Isayama that ended in 2021, "Attack on Titan" is set in a world where humans live behind walls that protect them from giant monsters called titans.

2. Jujutsu Kaisen

"Jujutsu Kaisen" released its highly-anticipated second season this year, and it was nothing but a rollercoaster ride.

Season 2 gave us a glimpse of Gojo Satoru's past, before taking us to Shibuya, where a series of staggering events took place. From amazing fight scenes to devastating losses, the new season signaled that things will never be the same for Itadori Yuuji going forward.

"Jujutsu Kaisen" is based on the manga by Gege Akutami. It follows Yuuji and his quest to kill the King of Curses, Sukuna.

3. One Piece

This year, Monkey D. Luffy's battle against Kaido, King of the Beasts, has finally concluded.

And it ended with a bang! As a major turning point in the story, Luffy unleashed a new transformation point: Gear 5. The episode where he finally wins ushered in a new beginning for the land of Wano. Heartwarming all around!

"One Piece" is based on the manga by Eiichiro Oda. Netflix released its live action adaptation of the story this year as well, and recently announced a new take on the anime.

4. Scott Pilgrim Takes Off

If we're talking about new anime, many tuned in to "Scott Pilgrim Takes Off."

Released just this November, the eight-episode first season is a retelling of the graphic novels written and drawn by Bryan O'Malley.

O'Malley and BenDavid Grabinski developed it for Netflix, with the entire main cast from the 2010 film adaptation, "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World," as the English voice cast.

It might not be for everyone, as it's more of a spin-of than an adaptation, but it was definitely talked about!

5. Spy x Family

Of course, the list wouldn't be complete without our favorite wholesome (but actually deadly) family.

The Forger family returned for a second season of "Spy x Family," and they're as fun to watch as ever. As charming as they are with their attempts at a mundane life, all three family members continue hiding their secrets: Loid is a government agent, Yor is an assassin, and Anya is a telepath.

"Spy x Family" is based on the manga by Tatsuya Endo. —JCB, GMA Integrated News
