Quick tips for ‘no hulas’ look for the sweltering summer

Fresh in the morning, looking like a frying pan for lunch? Most of us have been there.

While oil-blotting paper is life, there has to be a way to keep the makeup we carefully put on our face...you know, on our face for the remainder of the day.

Certified trainer and senior makeup artist Faye Young in an interview with Unang Hirit Tuesday shared a few tips on achieving the coveted "no hulas" look.

Unfortunately, the harsh truth is that the best way to achieve the "no hulas" look is to keep makeup to a minimum and go for "no makeup" makeup. You can also go Korean and apply only a thin layer of cosmetic products. But: you can't do that if your skin looks dull, tired, et cetera.

"Ang secret ng Korean makeup ay magadang balat to begin with...Korean skin!" Young said, adding a joke.

Genetics aside, good skin can be achieved by developing a good routine. Remember to always wear sunscreen and moisturize — and remember to wash your face at night before going to bed.

As with all things, the gentler you are to your skin, the kinder it will be to you.

For your makeup base, Young enumerates three indispensable products: "Cleanser, toner, moisturizer."

As the name suggests, cleansers removes dirt, oil, and impurities from your skin. It's used in combination with toner, which removes whatever else is left after you cleanse. It also hydrates — but not as much as a moisturizer.

Invest in these three and you'll find that you might not need to buy expensive creams and powder to keep your face looking bright.

If your skin is oily, you might be wary of using moisturizers and cream-based products — but remember that oil and water don't mix. Water-based moisturizers keep the oil away and cream-based products resist sweat.

"Alalahanin po natin...ang oil at tubig ay hindi nag-mimix. Ang sweat ay tubig. Ibig sabihin, if we use an oil-based makeup, i-re-repel niya 'yon," Young said.

After applying the cream-based makeup, apply a thin layer of powder for that matte effect and to set everything.
