Maintaining dramatic red lips especially, is more difficult.

According to professional makeup artist Cherry Pacheco, starting with clear, dry lips will help lipstick stick better.

If your lips are extra dry and you are using a matte lipstick, she suggests applying lip balm or lip primer first.

“Lip primers can help make the lipstick application smoother, and it also makes the lipstick last longer on the lips,” she says.

She provides a helpful step-by-step application guide you can follow for budge-proof red lips:

  1. Apply the lipstick straight to your lips. [There’s] no need for a brush, unless it’s the liquid kind, [in which case,] use the applicator.
  2. After applying the first coat, blot or stamp lips on a tissue. This steps takes off excess lipstick and prevents it from getting on the teeth. The ‘stamping’ action also makes sure the pigments are pressed onto the lips, [making them] last longer.
  3. Apply a second coat for fuller color.
  4. Finally, trace the lips with a lip liner of the same shade to seal in the color.

“If you want long-lasting red lips, use a matte or semi-matte formula. The more matte it is, the longer it stays. [And] avoid lip gloss on top if you don’t want your lipstick to run or feather,” advises Cherry.

Pressed for time? Jigs Mayuga shares an abridged version: “Apply lipstick. Blot. Apply a sheet layer of powder on the lips. Reapply lipstick.”

And you’re good to go!
