Press Secretary Angeles: Wearing Filipiniana at SONA helps revive tradition, economy

The wearing of Filipiniana and barong has become a tradition at the State of the Nation Address, but it’s definitely more than just about appearing fashionable.

In an interview with the press on Monday, Press Secretary Trixie Cruz-Angeles said it’s also about helping the economy.

“The reason we encourage Filipiniana is to revive the traditional industry, iyong pinya weaving natin,” she said.

“As you know, the economy is foremost in the [priorities] of our President,” she added.

“This is one way of contributing to it, kaya maganda iyong meron tayong face-to-face. We get dressed up once in a while para iyong industry natin, tuloy-tuloy iyong pagyabong niya.”

She added that the SONA was a venue for Filipino designers to express their creativity.

For President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.’s first SONA, Cruz-Angeles wore a modern take on Maria Clara with “samurai vibes.” The dress was designed by Dobie Aranda.

Other Filipino designers who have showcased their creations during the event include Mark Bumgarner, Len Capili, Chynna Mamawal, Albert Raqueño, Randy Ortiz, and Jun Escario. – RC, GMA News
