A smoker heading for Boracay? Know designated smoking areas first or get fined
If you're a smoker planning to visit world-famous Boracay Island, better know first where designated smoking areas are, before even thinking of lighting a stick of your favorite brand. Otherwise, be ready to dig your pocket for at least P500 to a maximum of P2,500 for the first offense.
Local health officials in Aklan province are enforcing a no-smoking ordinance there, GMA News stringer Jun Aguirre reported.
Also, he said the ordinance will help promote a healthy lifestyle among Aklan residents.
While in Boracay, smokers can still smoke, of course, except in places where the ban is imposed.
Under the comprehensive anti-smoking ordinance in the municipality of Malay – where Boracay is located – "it shall be unlawful for any person to smoke... in public utility vehicles, government-owned vehicle or any other means of public transport... accommodation and entertainment establishment, public building, public place..., enclosed public place, or in any enclosed area outside of one’s private residence..."
Boracay Smoking Ban
Those found violating the smoking ban will be fined P500 to P2,500 for the first offense; and P1,000 to P5,000 for the second offense.
The third offense may net a fine of P5,000 plus community service.
Aside from Boracay, other areas in Aklan are similarly imposing no-smoking ordinances, including Ibajay and Buruanga.
Visitors to Boracay will also be discouraged from littering. — Joel Locsin/LBG, GMA News
