How to enjoy winter in Sapporo, according to ‘Biyahe ni Drew’

Known as one of the best cities in Asia to enjoy snow, Sapporo in Japan serves as a winter playground for kids and adults alike. But more than engaging in a snowball fight or creating a snow angel, biyaheros can do more cool activities in the capital of Hokkaido.

Filipinos may not be used to the cold, but it doesn’t mean they can’t enjoy the winter wonderland that is Japan’s fifth largest city. GMA News TV’s resident biyahero Drew Arellano and his ‘Biyahe ni Drew’ crew have listed the top things to do in Sapporo in wintertime:

Sled at Moerenuma Park

Who knew a landfill could turn into a beautiful park? Since being opened to the public in 2005, Moerenuma Park became a lush retreat from the city. Boasting beautiful sculptures such as the Glass Pyramid and a breathtaking landscape that can be enjoyed from the top of Mt. Moere, Moerenuma Park transforms into a blanket of snow in winter—where visitors can try fun activities such as sledding.

Check into Hokkaido Ice Star Hotel

If you want to experience staying in a room made of nothing but ice blocks, head on over to Hokkaido Ice Star Hotel Komaoka. The special ice hotel set-up was held at Sapporo in the Minami Golf Club Komaoka this year. After winter, the area transforms back into a golf course.

Enjoy Sapporo’s view at Mt. Moiwa

When in Sapporo, treat yourself to a 360-degree view of the city from 531 meters above sea level at Mt. Moiwa. The mountain has a viewing deck that gets beautiful views at nighttime.

Learn Hokkaido’s history at Kaitaku no Mura

Otherwise known as the Historical Village of Hokkaido, the open air museum reveals the history and culture of the Japanese island through an exhibit of old buildings. You may also experience riding a horse-drawn sled.

Enjoy the starry night at Nakajima Park

Marvel at the winter constellations at the Sapporo City Astronomical Observatory, a facility accessible at Nakajima Park. The season is the perfect time to look at the night sky, when stars become more visible than the rest of the year.

Go extreme at Sapporo Kokusai Ski Resort

Whether you’re a beginner or an advanced skier, Sapporo Kokusai Ski Resort has the perfect course for you. Snowboarding is also a recommended activity in this spacious ski resort.

Explore with snow shoes at Takino Suzaran Hillside Park Snow World

Snowshoeing, or hiking with snow shoes, is a must-try during the season. Take a tour and marvel at the park’s scenic views.

Try your hand at ice fishing at Barato River

It’s simple: you drill a hole on thick ice covering the river and wait until you get a catch. Ice fishing is a thrilling winter activity that everyone with the opportunity has to experience.
