DOT names Guillaume Néry as PHL's freediving ambassador

The Department of Tourism (DOT) has named French celebrity diver Guillaume Néry as the Philippines' freediving ambassador.

Tourism Secretary Wanda Tulfo-Teo announced that they have chosen the two-time freediving champion to best promote the Philippines as a top freediving destination in Asia.

“To have a world-renowned figure like Guillaume Néry on board is both a privilege and opportunity for the country to position [itself] better in the diving industry of the region,” Teo said.

“Our extraordinary array of marine life and calm waters makes the Philippines an ideal place to learn and engage more tourists in freediving,” she added.

The DOT made the announcement during the last day of Néry's first of two freediving workshops in Cebu.

The first freediving workshop was held in Mactan from July 15 to 17. The next workshop will be held in Moalbal from August 4 to 6.

"Both three-day workshops will be a full immersion with the Freediving Ambassador for the Philippines Néry and will cover the basics of freediving – yoga, deep breathing exercises, complete with practical sessions (dry, pool, and open water practices)," the DOT said.

Néry's one-month dive tour includes Malapascua, Coron, and El Nido. He will also freedive with Badjaos in Davao.

Néry will also take part in DOT's forthcoming international dive shows and exhibitions to reel in more freediving competitors and enthusiasts.
