Duterte attends Bacolod’s MassKara Festival

President Rodrigo Duterte on Sunday graced the celebration of the 38th MassKara Festival in Bacolod City.

In his speech, Duterte praised the locals of the city, saying, "Gusto ko makita, behind the mask is the beautiful people of Bacolod... Bilib ako sa inyo. At saludo ako."

"It is my pleasure to join you in celebrating your 38th MassKara anniversary. Born from the unified efforts of the locals to uplift people's morale in the hardship that hit the people of Bacolod, the festival became a symbol of the people's happy disposition and resilience during difficult times," Duterte said.

"Every year, the festivities never fail to give guests a most memorable experience. In fact this is the most anticipated event in the region. It is no wonder that Bacolod City is regarded as the City of Smiles," he added.

The President emphasized that Bacolod's "colorful masks continue to attract visitors from around the world."

He also hailed the local government of Bacolod for making the event successful.

"More than merrymaking, let MassKara festival be a continuing testament that no amount of hardship would dampen the Filipino spirit," Duterte said.

The first MassKara festival was held in 1980, at a time when the city was reeling from low sugar prices and a maritime tragedy that resulted in the death of 700 people, many from Bacolod. Residents and the local government decided to hold a festival of smiles that would show Bacolod's resilience in the face of hardship and tragedy.  — Anna Felicia Bajo/BM, GMA News
