A day well-spent on Corregidor Island

Considering the closure of Boracay, tourists are now challenged to explore new fronts of getaway destinations.

Enter Corregidor. Just a two-hour ferry boat ride from Manila Bay in Pasay City, Corregidor offers tourists an amazing time learning about Philippine history vis-a-vis a refreshing and relaxing time at the beach.

Traditionally, Filipino heroes, patriots, martyrs, and defenders who fought and died for our country’s freedom and liberty are given tributes and honors in Corregidor.  The island is also known by Americans as the  "The Rock" or even the “Gibraltar of the East.”

Just on Saturday, April 7, 2018, at the Filipino Heroes Memorial, World War Veterans along with their families,  honors and remembers all the heroes of Corregidor and their unselfish love for country’s freedom and liberty.

Some of the top tourist places that can be visited in Corregidor Island are the Pacific War Memorial,  which is at the highest part of the Topside of Corregidor Island.

It has an altar and 40 feet steel structure called “Eternal Flame of Freedom” – all symbolizing the bravery of American and Filipino soldiers who served and lost their lives in a battle for liberty.

Aboard a Trambia, you can explore the Malinta Tunnel which served as a hospital of the American and Filipino forces during the war. Today, this tunnel is the venue for an audio-visual presentation by National Artist, Lamberto V. Avellana – that shows the events which occurred in the country during World War II.

Filipino Heroes Memorial is one of the latest additions to Corregidor which was established in 1992 during the regime of President Fidel V. Ramos. Designed by no less than Francisco Mañosa, the 6,000 square meter space showcases 14 murals by Manuel Casas that display the Filipinos’ heroic battles from the 15th century up to these modern times.

Corregidor Lighthouse was first lit in 1853 and is considered as one of the oldest beacons in Corregidor. It was damaged during the siege of the island in World War II, but was later on restored in the 1950s and just recently, its lantern runs on solar power as improved by the Philippine Coast Guard.
