Why millennials travel more
Millennials are not just the generation known for the internet and social media. They have also become the generation that seeks to witness the world.
According to the Philippine Travel Agencies Association (PTAA), millennials compose a big chunk of the people who have travelled for the past decade.
In a report on GMA'S "24 Oras", Namy Paz, a 26-year old who has been to 10 countries , said that she considers her experiences as her wealth in life.
"Naniniwala ako na ang best lessons in life is through experience so yun kung naexplore mo ibat ibang country, culture, na experience mo yung mga food, yung locals especially po."
She added, "Kunyari may nakakahalubilo ka na locals ayun po nakaka-gain ka po ng knowledge from that."
Research says that millennials are those who are born from the year 1981 to 1996.
Ritchie Tuano, president of PTAA said, "Long time back travel was a luxury. Ngayon before the year starts they know which are the long weekends which are the holidays, now its all calendarized. so, they plan ahead."
One of the reasons for this trend is the emergence of low cost carriers and easier booking through the internet.
In some cases, a Japan roundtrip ticket can even be found at the low cost of 10,000 pesos.
According to Tuano, social media has become one of the leading factors.
He said, "It has become an aspiration when they see some beautiful pictures posted on Facebook, 'Hey I want to go there also' parang ganun. Nag-i-snowball siya. As they call it in social media, nagiging viral yung trend ng pag-travel."
Sociologist Clifford Sorita said that millennials are having a more expansive point of view through the internet and social media.
Before the usual direction in life was to study, work and have a family, but because of the change in trend, millennials want different things in life, he explained.
Sorita said, "This generation kasi mapapansin mo for them it's more of self discovery first."
"It's more of me seeing the world, me seeing what the world can offer me and what I can offer the world kasi nga as a global world eh so pati ang kanyang perspective as global, hindi yung tipong parokyal lang na family life lang," he added. —Kaela Malig/LDF, GMA News
