In Basilan, a stunning tulip garden made of plastic waste
To manage plastic pollution, the Lamitan City of Basilan has gone pretty creative.
In its intensified solid waste management campaign it calls "Abante Lamitan, Atras Basura," a forever tulip garden — or rather the Forever Tulip Garden — sprouts.
The garden is composed of 30,000 tulips painted in various colors that will call to mind the famed Keukenhof Gardens of Netherlands.
The tulips are all made from some 30,000 discarded plastic bottles that have been collected by the city government, headed by Mayor Rose Furigay.
Located in Sitio Panansangan, the Forever Tulip Gardens will open on Monday, September 23. But as early as this weekend, tourists have already flocked.
Kudos to the creative solution, Lamitan, but here's hoping this won't encourage people to one up their plastic consumption. — LA, GMA News
