3 Manila hotels bag 2022 ASEAN Green Hotel Award


Three hotels in Manila reigned supreme at the recent 2022 South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) Tourism Forum.

City of Dreams Manila’s Nüwa Manila, Nobu Hotel and Hyatt Regency Manila bagged the ASEAN Green Hotel Award announced at the accolade ceremony held in Cambodia.

According to the hotel group, the three Forbes-rated establishments has undertaken various the environmental and CSR projects “geared towards contributing to a more sustainable future and the upliftment of communities they serve.”

These green initiatives include the installation of solar panels, reusing treated grey water, replacing single-use plastic bottles in hotel rooms with reusable and refillable, convenient pump bottles, as well as sustainable sourcing in its supply chain.

According to City of Dreams Manila, some 3,120 solar PV panels have been fully operational since 2020 and has generated about 1,617 MWh of electricity that year, "equivalent to the amount of CO2 absorbed by close to 19,000 tree seedlings grown for 10 years."

The luxury hotel complex launched its long-term sustainable programs in 2018, with the goal of having eco-efficient operations, aligned with the sustainability strategy of its mother company Melco. They aim for carbon neutrality and zero waste across its properties and resorts by 2030. 

Recipients of the the ASEAN Green Hotel Award are recognized for their adherence to  ASEAN Green Hotel Standards, which provide a  certification process aimed to increase the Environmentally-friendly and Energy Conservation in the ASEAN Accommodation industry, with a unified agreement across ASEAN Members States.

“Green hotels” need to meet a total of 11 major criteria, including environmental policy and actions for hotel operation; use of green products, collaboration with the community and local organizations; human resource development, and solid waste management.

Energy efficiency, water efficiency and water quality; air quality management (indoor and outdoor); noise pollution control; waste water treatment and management (water quality); as well as toxic and chemical substance disposal management are also taken into account.
