5 Bataan destinations to learn more about Philippine history
Araw ng Kagitingan, or the National Day of Valor, on April 9 commemorates the fall of Bataan during World War II. This day in Philippine history — on April 9, 1942 to be exact — saw Filipino and American soldiers formally surrender to Japanese troops after a three-month war.
According to Proclamation No. 466, s. 1989, April 5 to 11 is also known as Philippine Veterans Week, “to promote, preserve and memorialize the principles, ideals and deeds of the Filipino war veteran as a means to enhance patriotism and love of country, especially among the youth of the land.”
These historical holidays in April honor and thank those who died for and served the country.
Bataan has several destinations that commemorate these occasions, and here are five of them where you can learn more about the Philippines’ rich history and what Filipinos had to endure during wartime.
