IT intelligence firm Teradata expands to RP

MANILA, Philippines - The sophistication of the Philippine information technology (IT) industry has drawn the attention of Teradata Corp., a New York-listed data warehousing and enterprise analytics company, which announced its local expansion on Thursday. The 25-year old data warehouse company is banking on clients from the sectors of transportation, telecommunications, retail, logistics and finance to drive its growth in the Philippines. “The market outlook for companies in the Philippines is promising despite the global economic pressures, and the regional need for enterprise-class intelligence is strong," said Dennis Samuel, Teradata area vice president for Southeast Asia and India. Teradata provides a system for massive data storage which is easily accessible to help companies make decisions based on facts gathered from everyday operations. It offers space ranging from six terabytes to 60 petabytes. While companies are expected to tighten belts amid the economic slowdown, Samuel is optimistic that Philippine-based firms would recognize the importance of data warehousing. Teradata country manager Lyndon Lacaniente added that companies who will invest in data warehousing during a slow economy would likely get an edge over competitors. “They can prove that despite a difficult economic situation, they can deliver above par service. When the market picks up, they already have loyal customers," Lacaniente said. Teradata set up its office in Makati City last month. Officials said the company is also looking at Cebu as a potential expansion site given the thriving IT industry in the central and southern parts of the Philippines. Teradata already has three clients in the Philippines, one being Philippine Airlines and the two being major retail firms. The data warehouse firm serves 70 percent of the global airlines, 90 percent of the global telecommunications firms, and half of the top ten commercial and savings bank worldwide. - GMANews.TV
