Lenovo Mobile aims for No. 2 PHL handset brand

Banking on its recent success in China, Lenovo Mobile is eyeing the coveted second leading brand in the Philippine handset market.

Lenovo Mobile’s market share grew 1.2 percent last May in China, cornering 11 percent of the total and promoting the brand to the No. 2 position from third a year earlier.

Samsung is China’s No. 1 handset brand, but the gap between it and Lenovo is just 2.4 percentage points.

That was Lenovo’s highest market rank so far, according to Sino Market Research Ltd.

"We aim to have the same success globally and in the Philippines,” Xin Jun, Lenovo Mobile Headquarters manager for Overseas Department, in a statement Tuesday.

"As the smartphone market in the Philippines increases dramatically, Lenovo’s distributor, Open Communications is committed to offer more affordable, cutting-edge devices, superior customer service and relevant value-added services to Filipinos,” said John Rojo, Open Communications’ Business Unit head in Manila.

In the coming months, Lenovo Mobile will introduce more phones for the entry level around P5,000 and high end devices that cost more.

"Our goal is to allow majority of Filipinos to own smartphones,” Rojo noted. — VS, GMA News
