Auto tech school for Toyota global factories to open in Laguna
MARC JAYSON CAYABYAB, GMA News
Forget nursing. Auto technicians are emerging as an in-demand occupation for overseas workers.
To meet the demand for its factories around the globe, Toyota is building a technical training school in Santa Rosa, Laguna, its first in Asia.
The school will "produce globally-competent, highly-skilled automotive technicians for the Toyota family both in the Philippines and abroad," Toyota Motor Philippines Corp. (TMP) said in a statement.
"Through this school, which will operate as a non-profit organization, we will take another significant step to make the Philippines a human resources development hub for global Toyota," TMP president Michinobu Sugata said in a speech during the groundbreaking ceremony.
The Japanese carmaker broke ground for the school on Thursday, in the heart of the local export-processing industry and the longtime home of many Japanese manufacturing plants – including Nissan and Mitsubishi. The school is set to open 2013.
It has two educational programs – a two-year technician course after which graduates receive a certificate from the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority.
The school also offers an advanced general job course catering to the carmaker’s senior level employees. Non-technical subjects include safety fundamental skills, quality mindset, cost reduction and foreign languages. — VS/HS, GMA News
