Global recall of Toyota cars to affect 22,000 units in PHL — TMP

The global recall of 7.43 million units of defective Toyota models produced from 2006 to 2010 will affect 22,000 units in the country, Toyota Motor Philippines Corp. said on Thursday.

On Wednesday, Toyota announced the worldwide recall of millions of cars, trucks and SUVs to fix faulty power window switches that can cause fires. According to the company's statement, the sliding electrical contact point in the driver’s side power window master switch may experience a “notchy” or sticking feeling during operation which causes the button to get stuck.

The Philippines recall involves Camry, Corolla, Vios, Yaris and Rav4 models.

"As a preventive measure, we will inspect the power window master switch and apply specialized grease or replace specific component if deemed necessary, at no cost to the customer," TMP vice president Rommel Gutierrez said, adding that the move is "in line with our commitment to safety and quality."

Furthermore, "There will be no effect on sales," Gutierrez said in a text message.

The free inspection and replacement of affected parts will be offered at all Toyota dealers only.

Gutierrez added that if the vehicles are serviced in non-Toyota dealers and commercially available lubricant is used, the switch assembly could melt. — BM, GMA News
