Toyota to asses impact of closing China factory on PHL operations

An official of Toyota Motor Philippines Corp. said the company will assess the impact of a company decision to stop making cars at its biggest assembly plant in China starting next week and how it will affect the operations at its factory in Santa Rosa, Laguna.

"We have to assess the situation," Rommel Gutierrez, TMP vice president, told reporters in a text message Tuesday.

On Tuesday, Toyota announced plans to halt production for a week starting next Monday at its Tianjin FAW plant, citing low demand for Japanese cars because of a territorial squabble between Tokyo and Beijing.

The factory, one of nine Toyota plants in the country, accounts for about 60 percent of Toyota's China production, according to reports.

Gutierrez said Toyota does not distribute cars from China in the Philippines. "Zero from China and nine from Japan." — VS, GMA News
