Alsons Energy to put up 400-MW power plant for Tampakan mine

Alsons Energy Development Corporation will put up a 400-megawatt (MW) dedicated power plant for Sagittarius Mines' Tampakan copper mining project in South Cotabato.

The $892-million, 400-MW open cycle gas turbine and coal-fired power plant that will supply power to the mine will go up in the Kamanga Agro-Industrial Ecozone in Barangay Kamanga in Maasim, Sarangani.

The Tampakan mine is expected to produce 375,000 tons of copper and 360,000 ounces of gold per year in its initial mine-life of 17 years.

The plant will be owned and operated by Alsons Consolidated unit A/S Power Development, Inc.

The coal plant should ramp up power generation by 2017 and is scheduled to be fully operational by 2019.

Alsons Energy is a subsidiary of the Alcantara Group’s Alsons Consolidated Resources, Inc. — BM, GMA News
