Globe launches mobile service in Italy
Globe Telecom Inc., a tie up between conglomerate Ayala Corp. and Singapore Telecommunications Ltd., is expanding to Italy, the company said Monday.
Lawyer Marisalve Ciocson-Co, Globe compliance officer and vice president for legal services, said Globe Mobile Italy S.r. has tied up with Compagnia Italia Mobile S.r. and Belgium 2Effortel Technologies S.A. to launch a mobile service in Italy.
Ciocson-Co informed the Philippine Stock Exchange (PSE) that Globe services will include voice calling, SMS, load top-up, and mobile data for around 200,000 Filipinos based in,or visiting, Italy.
A Globe local Italy SIM will offer access to affordable voice, SMS, and mobile data bundles. It will also offer the most affordable rates to call Globe and TM subscribers at 5 euro cents per minute.
Globe executive vice president and chief operating officer for International and Business Markets Gil Genio said the company aims to provide the best connectivity packages to over 11 million Filipinos overseas.
“We are pleased to be able to introduce the Globe brand of service to Pinoys in Italy, making it more affordable to keep in touch with family and friends back in the Philippines,” he added.
The telco already has a strong retail presence in the US, the United Kingdom, Singapore, Saudi Arabia, and Hong Kong.
Globe also recently extended coverage of its DUO International, which assigns a local landline number that subscribers can call to reach a Globe number in the Philippines, to over 900,000 Filipinos living and working in Canada. DUO International available is available in the US, Korea, and the United Kingdom.
UK Globetel Limited, on the other hand, offers voice, SMS, MMS, and mobile data services to Filipinos in the UK.
Globe’s subscriber base increased 14 percent to 36.5 million as of end-September. Prepaid subscribers of Globe inched up by five percent to 16.96 million followed by TM subscribers with 23 percent to 17.57 million, and postpaid subscribers rose 19 percent to 1.98 million. — JDS, GMA News
