Robinsons Retail to open 80-90 stores to meet year-end target


Supermarket and department store operator Robinsons Retail Holdings Inc. is opening 80 to 90 mall-based stores in December to meet its 1,100 year-end target.
 
In a disclosure to the Philippine Stock Exchange Friday, Robinsons Retail said it topped its 1,000th store – a Robinsons Department store – in the recently opened Robinsons Place Butuan.
 
Apart from the department store, it opened on Friday six other stores in the new mall which include Robinsons Supermarket, Handyman, Do It Best, Toys "R" Us Toybox, Daiso Japan and South Star Drug.
 
"We're going to open more stores in two Robinsons malls in Malolos and Malabon by December," investor relations officer Gina Roa-Dipaling said in a phone interview.
 
"We also have stand-alones like Ministop, South Star Drug that will be opened next month," she added.
 
Last Nov. 18, the company announced it bought Eurogrocer Corp. – which owns a chain of supermarkets mostly in Central and Northern Luzon – for P290 million as part efforts to expand its business operations.
  
As of end-September 2013, Robinsons Retail was running 982 stores and plans to increase the number to 1,391 by 2014.
 
It listed on the Philippine Stock Exchange on Nov. 11.
 
The company operates Robinsons Supermarkets and Robinsons Department Stores, Handyman, Do It Best, True Value, Howards Storage World, Toys "R" Us, International Apparels and is the local franchise holder of Japanese convenience store chain Ministop. – VS, GMA News
