Toyota Motor PHL to launch Wigo, revitalize Innova

Toyota Motor Philippines Corp. (TMPC) is targeting to sell 500 units per month of Wigo, the small hatchback car, which will be introduced to the market later this month.

"The small car segment is gradually expanding together with the Mirage. When motorization takes place, it is from that segment so we decided to put our product in that segment," TMPC president Michinobu Sugata told reporters on Monday.

The Mitsubishi Mirage is the present market leader in the small hatchback cars, selling around 400 units a month, which Toyota intends to top.

"We're aiming for a little bit higher than that," Sugata said.

Toyota is primarily looking at first-time buyers and owners on the prowl for a second car, with the Wigo expected to retail for at least P450,000 and at most P530,000 per unit.

So far, TMPC isn't entertaining plans to assemble the Wigo at its factory in Santa Rosa, Laguna, Sugata noted, citing the abase of local suppliers for the model.

In the case of multi-purpose vehicle or MPV, specifically the Innova, Toyota intends to roll out the latest model this year, which will be made in Santa Rosa.

The goal is to sell 1,200 to 1,300 units of the Innova.

"The MPV segment slipped last year. With this new model, we hope to revitalize the MPV segment," Sugata said. – VS, GMA News
