Emirates cancels Clark-Dubai flights, cites competition, fuel tax, lower passenger volume

Emirates on Monday said its is canceling direct flights to Dubai from Clark International Airport in Pamapanga, citing low passenger volume, stiff competition, and the excise tax on jet fuel for international flights.

Instead, the airline will maintain its Manila-Dubai flights from the Ninoy Aquino International Airport

Starting May 1, 2014 or barely seven months since it started the route, Emirates will no longer service the Clark-Dubai flights, the airline said in a statement released to media organizations.

“The decision was made after a review of the airline’s operations to ensure the best utilization of its aircraft fleet for its overall business objectives,” the airline noted.

“Emirates will continue to operate its three daily, non-stop flights between Manila and Dubai and is taking all necessary steps to accommodate affected passengers on alternate flights,” Emirates said.

The Clark International Airport Corp. (CIAC) is confirming the decision of Emirates to stop launching flights from Clark International, said Victor Jose Luciano, CIAC president and chief executive officer.

He noted the excise tax on aviation fuel imposed by the Bureau of Internal Revenue as one of the reasons the airline cited for canceling its Clark-Dubai flights. – VS, GMA News
