PLDT takes in T-Mobile, to expand in North America

Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co. (PLDT) is targeting an estimated 3.5 million Filipinos who live and work in the US and Canada as it expands its presence in North America under a mobile virtual network or MVNO deal.

“We are working with our US partner T-Mobile,” PLDT Global president and CEO Alex Caeg said, citing the deal as the eighth MVNO agreement after similar arrangements were signed in Macau, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Guam, Taiwan, United Kingdom, and Singapore.

The virtual network services will be launched in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Honolulu, San Diego, and Las Vegas around June 12 to coincide with the Philippine Independence Day.

“We don't like to pre-empt it but we are launching in five locations in the US around the independence week," said Caeg.

The telco estimates the number of the Filipino-American community in North America at 3.5 million documented Filipinos.

A similar MVNO arrangement will likely be signed in Canada next month, said Caeg. – VS, GMA News
