Jollibee happy in August despite #ChickenSad, supply issues

Despite the #ChickenSad issue earlier this month, Jollibee Foods Corp. on Monday said its sales performance for the period was still higher than that from a year ago.

In an e-mailed statement Monday, Jollibee said system wide sales – which reflects sales from both company-owned and franchised restaurants – for the first 17 days of August amounted to P3.8 billion, a 7.7 percent improvement over the same period in August 2013.

For August 17 alone, when all the temporarily closed branches resumed operations, Jollibee said total system-wide sales in the Philippines amounted to P288.3 million, a 28.2 percent jump versus the same day a year ago.

The fast food giant said this was even faster than the 15 percent growth in system-wide sales for the month of July 2014 and the 14.8 percent growth in the second quarter of 2014.

"Sales for Sunday, August 17, 2014 were very strong across the brands despite the limited availability of non-core products in some stores," the company said in the statement.

"The sales growth was very significant, most likely due to pent-up demand resulting from the lack of available products in the past two weeks," it added.

In terms of same store sales growth, Jollibee saw a 23.2 percent growth for August 17 for its brands in the Philippines versus the same date a year ago.

This compared with the average 10 percent same store sales growth registered by the same brands in the second quarter of 2014.

For the first 17 days of August, same store sales of the fast food giant's brands in the Philippines represented a growth of six percent, compared with a 10 percent growth in the month of July 2014.

Same stores sales pertain to stores that have been opened for at least 15 months and exclude additional sales generated by recently opened outlets.

Last week, Jollibee said all Metro Manila branches will be open by Sunday, as operations were returning to normal after a systems upgrade compelled at least 72 branches of the fastfood giant to close down while others continued to operate on limited menu.

The JFC Group, which owns Jollibee, disclosed that it recently upgraded its computer systems on August 1, but was bogged down in the process by technical difficulties. As a result, there was a slowdown in deliveries of products from the Jollibee commissary to its outlets.

Jollibee said all products are expected to be available in all the stores within the week of August 18.

Moving forward, Jollibee said sales growth will likely stabilize at eight to 10 percent on a same store basis, comparable to the growth rates in recent quarters.

"The JFC Group of Companies looks forward to the full restoration of its excellent service to its customers and the complete availability of its products in all the stores in the Philippines," it said. —NB, GMA News
