40 PHL-registered vessels get landmark compliance certificates from DOLE

The Department of Labor and Employment has issued certificates of compliance to 40 domestic vessels sailing under the Philippine flag and owned by 15 Philippine domestic shipping companies.
Labor Secretary Rosalinda Baldoz said the certificates under the new Labor Laws Compliance System (LLCS) is a first in Philippine history.
"This is the first time in the history of Philippine labor that the DOLE covers domestic ships. The LLCS now applies to companies and workers in domestic shipping and, thus, I encourage companies of Philippine-registered ships plying domestic waters to voluntarily comply with all labor laws," Baldoz said.
Citing a Maritime Industry Authority list, DOLE said there are 8,451 domestic vessels under Philippine registry as of 2012.
Of these, 6,785 have gross tonnage (GRT) below 200 gross tons, 883 between 200 and 499 GRT, and 783 with 500 GRT and above.
For 2014, the DOLE targets the 783 vessels with 500 and above gross tons for joint assessment under the LLCS.
DOLE Metro Manila head Alex Avila reported the 40 domestic vessels were given certificates during a program marking the first anniversary of the entry into force of the Maritime Labor Convention, 2006.
Avila identified the 15 shipping companies which own the 40 ships as follows:
- Buenos Aires Lighterage Inc. (one vessel)
- Christie Transport Inc. (one vessel)
- F.I.C. Marketing Co. Inc. (four vessels)
- Herma Shipping And Transport Corp. (eight vessels)
- International Tankers Corp. (one vessel)
- Islands Integrated Offshore Services, Inc. (six vessels)
- Loadstar Shipping Co., Inc. (two vessels)
- Moreta Shipping Lines Inc. (two vessels)
- Ocean Bees Inc. (four vessels)
- Petrotrade Phils. Inc. (four vessels)
- Recto Cifra Agro-Industrial Inc. (one vessel)
- Resins Incorporated (one vessel)
- Sealoader Shipping Corporation (two vessels)
- Siment Transport Inc. (one vessel)
- Swordfish Marine Services Corporation (two vessels).
CoCs were also issued to Therma Mobile Inc., (four vessels) and Phil. Ecology Systems Corp. (two vessels) for their ships.
Of the 40 vessels, only two are registered with the Port of Cebu. The rest are registered with the Port of Manila, Avila said.
The CoCs were issued to the vessels after a joint assessment, where management and worker representatives meet with Labor officials to assess compliance with labor, safety and health regulations. – Joel Locsin/VS, GMA News
