Brownouts loom in parts of Metro Manila, Bulacan as Luzon grid placed on red alert
Brownouts loom over parts of Metro Manila on Monday as the National Grid Corp. of the Philippines placed its Luzon grid on red alert.
The Manila Electric Cop. also advised its customers of a one-hour rotating brownout from 1 to 3 p.m.
In a post on its Twitter account, Meralco cited the outage of the Calaca 2 and GN Power plants. Areas affected include: Sampaloc, Tondo, Grace Park, Malabon, Valenzuela, Novaliches, Kaybiga and portions of Bulacan (Meycauayan, Calumpit, Sta. Maria & Malolos) from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m.; and Malabon area from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m.
The NGCP's power situation outlook as of noon indicated the Luzon grid had only 483 megawatts of reserve power.
NGCP defines a “yellow alert” as a system condition where the total reserve is less than the capacity of the largest plant online. For the Luzon grid, this is 647 MW.
The NGCP said Luzon only had 483 MW reserve, with system capacity of 8,393 MW and a system peak demand of 7,910 MW.
Visayas has only 48 MW reserve power, with 1,527 MW system capacity and 1,479 MW of peak demand. Mindanao has 73 MW of reserve, with system capacity of 1,399 MW and peak demand of 1,326 MW. —Joel Locsin/NB, GMA News
