PHL May online hiring activities down 43% on-year – Monster.com report

Online hiring activities in the Philippines recorded a 43 drop in May from a year earlier, according to the Monster Employment Index (MEI) of jobs site Monster.com.

This compares with a 31 percent year-on-year decline in hiring activities last April.

The declines have made the overall negative growth apparent across all industry and occupation sectors in terms of online recruitment activities, Monster.com said on Thursday.

“Although the Philippines’ government is attempting to increase job creation, these efforts have not yet shown results, said Sanjay Modi, Monster.com managing director in the Middle East and Southeast Asia.

"The Philippines has registered a sharp slowdown in online recruitment activity, with the lowest in the last three years being reported in Q1 2015. The latest data from MEI Philippines show this decline is continuing," he added.

The Business Process Outsourcing and Information Technology-Enabled Services (BPO/ITES) industry registered its second consecutive annual decline at 2 percent, the least drop among all industries.

Online activities involving Customer Service jobs has remained the same in April 2015 at -5 percent year-on-year, while Engineering/Production and Real Estate jobs continue to fall steeply at -54 percent and the Human Resources and Administrative roles stood at -47 percent.

But the steepest decline in online hiring activities across all industry sectors was posted by the Production/Manufacturing, Automotive and Ancillary industry for the fourth consecutive year-on-year drop at 62 percent.

“With significant drops in exports and the reduction of government spending in the country, hiring activities are unlikely to be picking up anytime soon,” Modi noted.

The Monster Employment Index Philippines aim to gauge online job posting activities on a monthly basis based on real time review of millions of employer generated job opportunities culled from a representative selection of career websites and online job listings across the Philippines, with data collected since January 2011.
