MIAA to Uber, GrabCar: Get accredited to pick up passengers at NAIA

The Manila International Airport Authority is open to accrediting transportation network vehicles under such companies as Uber and GrabCar, MIAA general manager Jose Angel Honrado said on Monday.

Honrado said such vehicles will be allowed to pick up passengers at the terminals of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport if they follow the agency's accreditation procedures.

"Why not, but they have to go through accreditation procedure, like taxi tourist car, hotel transport, etc.," MIAA general manager Jose Angel Honrado told GMA News Online in a text message.

Under the terms and conditions set by the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) for transportation network companies, TNVs are prohibited to pick up passengers at the airports, unless authorized by the airport management.

Honrado said the MIAA—which manages the NAIA terminals—has its own accreditation procedure.

"If they are accredited by MIAA, I am not aware of any impediments," he said.

Last May, the Department of Transportation and Communications came up with a new classification to allow app-based transportation services to operate in the country.

App-based transportation service providers Uber and GrabCar got their LTFRB accreditation just before the August 20 deadline. —NB, GMA News
