Sustainable products gain momentum among Pinoy consumers – Nielsen

Filipinos who are willing to pay more for sustainable products and services are on the rise, a new study by global performance management company Nielsen shows.

According to the 2015 Nielsen Global Corporate Sustainability Report, there has been an increase among Filipinos who buy socially responsible brands, even being the strongest globally.

The report shows that close to nine in 10 (86 percent) Filipino consumers say they are willing to pay extra for products and services that come from companies who are committed to positive social and environmental impact, Nielsen said.

“Sustainability is a worldwide concern and this is especially true for consumers in a growing population such as the Philippines to be continually aware of environmental and societal issues,” Stuart Jamieson, managing director of Nielsen Philippines said in an emailed statement on Tuesday.

“More exposed to the stress in the environment and its effect on the community, consumers are trying to be responsible citizens and they expect the same from corporations,” he added.

Consumers are now doing their homework, checking labels before buying, and even looking online for information on business and manufacturing practices.

“Companies with strong reputations outperform others when it comes to attracting top talent, investors, community partners, and importantly, consumers,” he said.

The top sustainability factor that influences Filipino consumers is health and wellness, as products with fresh, natural, and organic ingredients appeal strongly to them, Nielsen noted. – Jon VIktor Cabuenas/VS, GMA News
