Petron monitoring situation at fire-hit Shaw station

Petron Corp. on Sunday said it continues to monitor the situation at its gasoline station along Shaw Boulevard which caught fire after a construction incident around the area.

"We deeply regret this unfortunate incident that happened in one of our dealer-operated stations along Shaw cor. Wack-Wack Road. Our technical group was immediately activated to assist the Bureau of Fire Protection, our dealer and its contractor. The fire was put out within 20 minutes. Our team, however, remains onsite to ensure that lives and property in the area are protected," it said in a statement.

Workers have also started careful digging to clean out the LPG tank, with a fire truck on hand in case anything happened.

Its station along Shaw Boulevard in Mandaluyong City caught fire late Friday afternoon, after a backhoe hit an LPG tank which in turn caused the fire.

The Department of Energy (DOE) has started an investigation into the incident, saying it will not hesitate sanctions on possible violations of safety standards.

For its part, Petron said it will provide assistance to those affected by the incident.

"Meanwhile, the same team continues to assist the two victims in the hospital where they are being treated. We are fully cooperating with relevant authorities and remain vigilant to assure the safety of our customers and the public," it said. —Jon Viktor D. Cabuenas/ALG/BM, GMA News
