Electricity rates down in January —Meralco

Customers of the Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) will open the year with cheaper rates, mainly due to a reduction in generation charges during the period.

In an e-mailed statement on Wednesday, Meralco said it will lower electricity rates by P0.5260 per kilowatt-hour (/kWh) to bring down the overall rate to P8.7227/kWh from December's P9.2487/kWh.

"The rate decrease this month amounts to around P105 reduction in the total bill of a typical residential customer consuming 200kWh," it said.

According to Meralco, the decrease is mainly due to a reduction in generation charges which were cut down by P0.5277/kWh.

Meralco urged the public, however, to start practicing energy efficiency initiatives with the summer season approaching.

"As summer approaches, Meralco once again encourages its customers to continue practicing energy efficiency initiatives to help manage their electricity consumption," it said. — MDM, GMA News
