Dusit Thani’s industry standards in hiring

The Philippines prides itself in being one of the most hospitable countries in the world, welcoming guests with that incredible Filipino warmth and kindness.

As such, tourism and hospitality-related  industries continue to be the top choice of employment among Pinoys.

With increasing competition, Dusit Thani Public Co. Ltd. managing director of Education Lars Eltvik and chef Cyrille Soenen shared their insights on how applicants may stand out and lead the pack in the hospitality sector.

The Thai hotel brand has one location in the business and financial district of Makati, and is now in the process of expanding with another branch in nearby Taguig City that will house both a hotel a school.

Be outgoing and sociable

“As a stereotype, Filipinos in the hospitality world are known to be very hospitable, very outgoing, and creative people, well suited for the hospitality and tourism industry,” Eltvik said in a sit-down interview.

Individuals in the sector are widely expected to be outgoing and sociable as they interact not only with colleagues but clients as well.

“They need to have the personality traits of being somewhat extrovert, being people persons, like to work with people,” Eltvik said.

Be passionate, be motivated

Companies can gauge more or less the personality of an applicant, and this is a crucial factor in deciding the likelihood of employment.

“When you’re talking about hospitality and hospitality education, it’s obviously very important that students and entrants into the job market have the technical skills,” Eltvik said.

But equally important is that they have the personality traits, they have the ambition, the motivation, and—for the lack of a better word—the suitability for the hospitality industry.

Exceed expectations

As one of the top brands in the sector, Eltvik said Dusit Thani employees are expected to go above and beyond.

“We empower our staff to exceed expectations always, and this comes through our mottos,” he said. “We care, we commit to what we do, and have a can-do attitude in everything we do.”

Be open for growth

Apart from skills, Eltvik said firms also take a look at the possibility of growth for applicants who try to get into the company and its academic program.

“At the same time, (they need to) have the academic ability, the capability to learn managerial material and to excel through the program,” he said.

The Dusit brand recently opened its academic institution which currently offers a Bachelor of Science Degree in Hospitality Management.

The school has teamed up with world-renowned brands such as Switzerland’s École hôtelière de Lausanne and Institut Paul Bocuse to ensure global standards.

After four years of training at Dusit, Eltvik said students hopefully leave the company with a “real passion” for the industry. —LA/VDS, GMA News
