Globe's internet service in Visayas, Mindanao down due to severed cables

Subscribers of Globe Telecom in the Visayas and Mindanao shall expect internet service interruptions due to severed fiber optic cables, one of which was caused by the 5.5-magnitude quake that jolted Occidental Mindoro on Saturday.

In an advisory on Saturday, the Ayala-led telecommunications firm said customers in some areas in Visayas and Mindanao may temporarily be unable to use mobile data and Home Broadband internet due to two fiber cuts including a submarine cable cut.

"A fiber cut was caused by an unknown vehicle that dragged the cable at a road crossing near San Juan Elementary School in Del Gallego south of Tagkawayan, Quezon and the submarine cable cut was caused by the magnitude 5.5 earthquake that jolted Occidental Mindoro," Globe said.

The quake, which occurred at 9:05 a.m., is tectonic in origin. It had a depth of 12 kilometers with the epicenter located in Rizal town, Occidental Mindoro.

"Globe personnel are currently accelerating efforts to restore services as soon as possible. We shall update you as soon as our services are back to normal," the telco said. —Ted Cordero/KG, GMA News
