DTI catches stores selling overpriced, fake N95 masks
The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) on Tuesday said it found at least seven medical supply stores selling overpriced N95 masks in Manila.
The DTI, which conducted an inspection following several consumers complained online, issued notices of violation to the seven stores.
“Maraming nagtitinda nang tama ang presyo pero marami ring nagsasamantala sa consumers natin,” Undersecretary Ruth Castelo told reporters.
Some stores claimed buying from suppliers at P44 to P65 per mask and selling them for P60 to P100.
Store owners said their profit margins are minimal and that they have to consider operational costs.
Castelo explained that the law only allows a 10% profit margin for businesses.
“Pero yung ibang based on the delivery receipt na nakita, more than 20% yung add on na profit. So yung mga 'yon, plus yung iba, wala pang delivery receipt,” Castelo said.
Castelo also discovered that fake N95 masks are being sold.
“This is not even medical grade. Hitsurang N95 lang,” Castelo said.
Health Undersecretary Eric Domingo said the government will seize counterfeit products and slap charges against merchants selling them.
“Bawal 'yon. Kasi ang medical devices, meron ‘yang standards for each medical product. At kapag nagpasok tayo ng mga fake o mga counterfeit products, ito ay maaaring kunin ng gobyerno. At maaari nating kasuhan ang nagtitinda ng fake na mga gamot na produkto at medical devices,” Domingo said.
Violators stand to face charges of profiteering, illegal act of price manipulation, and unconscionable acts under the Consumer Act.
Penalties include imprisonment, a fine of P5,000 to P1 million, and suspension or cancellation of business permits. — MDM, GMA News
