PLDT schedules 5-day emergency maintenance of cable system

PLDT Inc. will conduct emergency maintenance of one of its international cable systems starting Friday. It is estimated to take five days.

In an advisory released via social media, the Pangilinan-led company said the work on the Asian American Gateway (AAG), one of PLDT's international cable systems, will start 8:00 a.m. on Friday, September 25, 2020, and finish on Wednesday, September 30, 2020.

"We would like to assure PLDT and Smart Communications Inc. subscribers that measures have been put in place to minimize this activity's impact," the advisory read.

"We shall provide regular updates as the operation progresses, we thank you for your understanding," it added.

No further details on the maintenance activities and its impact on services were immediately available.

In July, Smart vice president for legal and regulatory affairs Roy Cecil Ibay said the company is operating four landing stations: one each in Batangas, Cavite, La Union, and Daet.

The company is now working to build three more stations in the next three years, named Jupiter, the ADC, and the Apricot projects.

The first one—the Jupiter Landing Station—is scheduled to be initiated by mid-2021, followed by the ADC Landing Station in 2022, and the Apricot in 2023.

Meanwhile, Globe Telecom Inc. has three cable stations: one each in Ballesteros, Cagayan; Nasugbu, Batangas; and Davao. — Jon Viktor D. Cabuenas/BM, GMA News
