Globe to provide credits for roaming services in Myanmar

Ayala-led Globe Telecom Inc. on Sunday said it will provide credits for customers using roaming services in Myanmar, given the unrest due to the recent coup d’état in the country.

In an advisory, Globe said it will provide prepaid load or postpaid bill adjustments for customers to make and receive calls, send SMS, and use data roaming.

The company did not provide specific details on how much credits would be given, but said customers will be connected to its partner network Telenor.

This comes as the Myanmar military staged a coup and arrested civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi and her National League for Democracy (NLD) party members after winning over 80% of the votes in the November elections.

The military claimed the elections were marred with fraud and declared Myanmar under a state of emergency for a year. Internet, television, and communication lines were cut off and the democratic government was taken over by the military.

On Sunday, thousands of anti-coup protestors marched on the streets to condemn the coup. They held up banners and signature red flags of the NLD, as protesters said they will move forward and keep fighting for democracy.

Globe in September said it will embark on a three-pronged network upgrade strategy, on the heels of the Philippine government's call for telecommunications firms to improve connectivity amid the lockdowns implemented to curb the spread of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).

The company said that its network upgrades would be completed this year. — DVM, GMA News
