Viber taps GCash to allow digital payments for in-app MSME food sellers

Messaging app Viber has tapped GCash and Globe myBusiness to allow digital payments for those who transact through its directory of food sellers.

In a statement, GCash said its partnership with Viber will allow micro, small, medium enterprises (MSMEs) food sellers in the messaging app’s FoodPH directory to receive payments from buyers via QR codes.

FoodPH is Viber’s own food directory, where its users can search for a specific type of food, a certain cuisine, or look for a dish based on location.

Through this partnership, FoodPH merchants can make online food orders more convenient for their buyers, GCash said.

“With QR codes, both our FoodPH partner merchants and their customers are now able to seamlessly transact with each other. As we’ve made the experience as convenient as possible, it encourages customers to support local businesses and order their food from MSMEs,” said David Tse, senior director of Rakuten Viber.

For her part, Globe myBusiness Marketing and Strategy head Maridol Ylanan said that its partnership with Viber will help the company achieve its commitment to provide entrepreneurs with digital solutions and know-how to help them succeed in their ventures.

“GCash used to generate QR codes only for bigger businesses to help them streamline their point-of-sale transactions. Along with Viber, we have realized that MSMEs, especially food businesses that have been hardly hit by the pandemic, will also greatly benefit from this feature,” said Fred Levy, chief commercial officer of GCash.

Launched in December 2020, FoodPH is Viber’s official food directory comprised of merchants that are part of its in-app community who are carefully sourced, with some listed through Globe MyBusiness.—AOL, GMA News
