Converge wants data transmission capacity doubled to 800 Gbps
Converge ICT Solutions Inc. on Tuesday said it is gearing to double the data transmission capacity of its metro backbone which will be able to download over 20 movies in a second.
In a regulatory filing, Converge said it is working for its metro backbone to reach a data transmission capacity of 800 Gigabits per second (Gbps) from the present 400 Gbps.
“Developments in cloud computing, big data, virtual reality, combined with the increasing demands on remote storage and streaming technology is creating massive demand on our network and data centers,” chief executive officer Dennis Anthony Uy said.
“We want to respond to the high-capacity needs of our network and customers, and to be able to accommodate any new-generation technologies they may have,” he added.
The metro backbone upgrade will mean more data will be pushed through data centers, decrease latency, and allow high-speed data transfers needed for next-generation technologies such as the Internet of Things and smart cities.
According to chief operating officer Jesus Romero, the upgrade to 800 Gbps will allow users to download the latest Valorant season and over 20 HD movies in a second.
“At the same time, this latest technology allows us to use less hardware to efficiently deliver our services, limits the possibility of congestion whether in normal or outage situations, and reduces our energy consumption and cost,” he said.
Converge has allocated P20 billion for its capital expenditures this year, mainly for the expansion of its backbone, and the deployment of additional fiber-to-the-home ports. It targets to reach 15 million or 55% of total Philippine households with its pure fiber connectivity by 2025.
The firm has allocated P33 billion for its “innovative and flexible” high-capacity backbone from a US-based networking systems, services, and software company.
