NAIA Terminal 5 to rise as Philippine Village Hotel’s demolition begins

Private operator New NAIA Infra Corporation's (NNIC) plan to construct a fifth passenger terminal at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) is finally pushing through as it will now proceed with the demolition of the abandoned Philippine Village Hotel.

“By April 21, ang Philippine Village Hotel ay idedemolish na natin (By April 21, the Philippine Village Hotel will be demolished). Right after Holy Week,” NNIC General Manager Lito Alvarez said at a press conference on Thursday.

Alvarez said the company has secured the necessary permits from various concerned agencies to proceed with the demolition.

NNIC has included the construction of a new passenger terminal at NAIA in its P122.3-billion commitment to improve the country’s main gateway when it took over the Manila airport’s operations and management.

“In five months’ time matatapos ang demolition. Gagawa tayo ng panibagong terminal, yan ang Terminal 5,” Alvarez said.

(The demolition will be finished in five months. We will build a new terminal, that’d be the Terminal 5.)

“In two to three years’ time that will be finished,” he said.

NNIC president Ramon Ang earlier said the planned fifth passenger terminal of the NAIA will have a capacity of 35 million passengers per year.

Alvarez emphasized the need for a passenger terminal to decongest NAIA since its designed carrying capacity is only at about 32 million to 34 million passengers yearly.

“In 2024, we carried about 51 million passengers… This year we expect 54 million passengers,” he said. —RF, GMA Integrated News
