McDonald's conducts safety checks on Cebu branches after earthquake

Fast food chain McDonald's inspected and performed safety checks on all of its branches in Cebu province following the 6.9-magnitude earthquake that jolted Bogo City and other areas on Tuesday evening.

In a statement on Wednesday, McDonald's said its Bogo branch "sustained major damage and remains closed."

Images of the collapsed McDonald's branch in Bogo City have gone viral, providing a glimpse of the devastation wrought by Tuesday night's tectonic earthquake.

The entire province of Cebu has been placed under a state of calamity in the quake's aftermath.

"Our latest reports show that all our crew, managers and customers are safe," McDonald's said.

It said its store in Carcar also remains closed.

McDonald's said its Il Corso store was spared from the impact of the earthquake and had resumed operations after inspection.

"All other McDonald’s Stores in Cebu are open and continue to serve customers and communities," it said.

"We continue to coordinate closely with our employees to ensure their well-being and that of their families. Rest assured that we remain committed to ensuring the safety of our customers and crew as we continue to serve the community," McDonald's added.

The company said it is working with the local government units in Cebu to serve meals to frontliners and affected communities.

Earlier in the day, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) reported 848 aftershocks following the earthquake, but only four were felt. — VDV/VBL, GMA Integrated News
