San Miguel waives toll for gov't relief vehicles in Typhoon Uwan response

San Miguel Corp. (SMC) on Monday announced toll-free access in its expressways for marked government vehicles mobilized for relief and recovery operations in areas hit by Typhoon Uwan (international name: Fung-wong).

In an advisory, SMC said its toll operations teams are coordinating with the Department of Transportation (DOTr) and the Toll Regulatory Board (TRB) to ensure the fast and unimpeded movement of government responders across Luzon.

SMC operates over 200 kilometers of expressways across Luzon, including the Skyway System, the South Luzon Expressway (SLEX), the STAR Tollway, the Tarlac-Pangasinan-La Union Expressway (TPLEX), and the NAIA Expressway (NAIAx).

“Our priority is to make sure responders get to affected communities as quickly as possible,” SMC chairman and chief executive officer Ramon Ang said.

“We have always worked with government in times of calamity. It’s part of our responsibility to help and to make sure aid reaches those who need it,” he added.

Uwan weakened into a typhoon early Monday morning, but tropical cyclone wind signals are still raised across several areas in the country.
