The Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) is pushing for stricter regulations on the installation of rooftop solar panels to prevent improper setups that may result in fire.

According to Mariz Umali’s report on “24 Oras, Meralco said it did not mean to get in the way of consumers having a cheaper source of power.

“It’s primarily a safety issue,” Meralco spokesman Joe Zaldarriaga said. “Isang maling instalasyon may result in accidental fire,” he added.

Zaldarriaga said there have been reports of fires caused by the solar panel installations that didn’t follow safety standards.

He also referred to “guerrilla installations” that have no permit and safety inspections from the local governments.

“Nandito kami para tumulong na umusbong itong mga rooftop solar installations as long as it is done properly, safely, and in consonance with government regulations,” Zaldarriaga said.

The consumer group Power for People Coalition said there was no need for more regulation as the safety issue is now covered by local government building and electricity codes, as well as inspections by the Bureau of Fire Protection.

“If that will be detrimental, we will definitely go to court to make sure electric consumers are protected,” said Gerry Arances, convenor of the P4P Coalition. –NB, GMA News
