Bangko Sentral closes Syrian pound exchange rate window

Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas on Friday ordered its cash department, regional offices, and authorized agent banks not to accept Syrian pounds anymore in exchange for pesos starting Saturday, Jan. 25, because the pound's currency exchange facility was terminated on Jan. 24.

Established for from Jan. 30 to May 30, 2013 to give Filipinos fleeing war-torn Syria the opportunity to exchange their pounds, the continuing conflict prompted Bangko Sentral to reopen the facility for another six months from July 28, 2013 to Jan. 24, 2014.
