Benguet strawberry growers still feeling effects of recent cyclones
Instead of enjoying brisk business at this time of year, strawberry growers are feeling the effects of the damage caused by cyclones that hit Northern Luzon during the second half of this year.
Despite a rise in the number of visitors to Benguet strawberry farms, harvest has declined this time, GMA Dagupan reported.
One of the attractions in La Trinidad town is the strawberry farm – but farmers said visitors may not fully enjoy the experience of harvesting strawberries.
"Nakataon sana ngayong buwan ang pag-aani ng strawberry pero hindi ito nahabol dahil sa mga nagdaang kalamidad," said farmer Cidwa Ramon.
The agriculture office also cited problems with some seeds and the supply of seeds.
In the meantime, some farmers have started planting lettuce on the plantations.
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council earlier said more than two million were affected by Tropical Storm Mario (Fung-Wong), which affected several areas in Luzon, including Ilocos.
Flower growers in Benguet also voiced concerns earlier that the damage brought by Mario and Typhoon Luis (Kalmaegi) would affect their flower produce for Undas (All Saints' and All SOuls' Days). — Joel Locsin /LBG, GMA News
