Nearly half of Cebu City’s agricultural barangays running out of irrigation water

Farmers in 15 of Cebu City's 31 agricultural barangays have sought the local government's help in getting water for irrigating their farms.

The farmers blamed the mild El Niño for the insufficient supply of water for irrigation, GMA Cebu reported Wednesday.

In some barangays, residents complained of not having enough water even for drinking, cooking or washing clothes.

For its part, Cebu City Vice Mayor Edgardo Labella plans to meet with the Cebu City fire station and Metro Cebu Water District to deliver water to the affected barangays.

"Nakipagkita kami with (fire marshal) Superintendent (Rogelio Jr.) Bongabong to highlight the need, the fire department to help supply the water especially in the upland barangays," Labella said.

Barangay Malubog captain Marjorita Cangmaong said their flowers are starting to wilt due to the lack of water.

On the other hand, Barangay Babag captain Cesar Bolorito said residents in two sitios have started "recycling" water, saving some of their bath water to use for flushing the toilet. — Joel Locsin/LBG, GMA News
