Red, yellow alerts raised over Visayas grid on Aug. 29, 2026 — NGCP

Power interruptions may hit electricity consumers in the Visayas on Saturday afternoon and evening due to limited power supply as multiple power plants remain unavailable.

In an 8 a.m. bulletin, the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) said yellow alert will be in effect from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m., followed by red alert from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., then back to yellow alert from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.

The grid operator said the Visayas grid is currently operating at 2,300 megawatts (MW) capacity against a peak demand of 2,355 MW.

The following were cited as factors that contributed to the red and yellow alerts in the Visayas grid:

• Unavailability of Visayas' large coal plants TVI 1, TVI 2, KSPC 1 and emergency shutdown of PEDC 3
• Limited power import from Mindanao

The NGCP said 13 power plants are on forced outage in August 2026, one plant since July, three plants since June, seven plants since May, one plant since March, three plants since 2025, two plants since 2024, two plants since 2023, and one plant since 2021.

Meanwhile, 15 plants are running on derated capacities, "for a total of 1,094.4 MW unavailable to the grid."

A red alert status is issued when power supply is insufficient to meet consumer demand and the transmission grid's regulating requirement.

Widespread power interruptions or rotational brownouts are expected.

In this situation, electricity might be cut temporarily in certain areas on a scheduled basis to prevent the entire grid from collapsing.

On the other hand, a yellow alert is issued when the operating margin is insufficient to meet the transmission grid's contingency requirement.

While supply is still enough to meet current demand, it no longer reaches the required safety margin.

At this level, the possibility of rotational power interruptions increases.

In a separate advisory, the NGCP said the power interruption covering parts of Iloilo province and Iloilo City has been deferred.

It was scheduled for Sunday, August 30, and would have affected the following:

• MORE — Arevalo, Molo, Diversion, IPG, Bolilao, Tabuc Suba and Megaworld substations
• ILECO 1 — Pavia substations
